ExxonMobil: Why is diversity and inclusion relevant to the energy industry?

Providing affordable energy to support prosperity while reducing environmental impacts – including the risks of climate change – is our industry’s dual challenge. A significant energy transition is underway and many factors will shape the world’s energy future. 

These include government policies that seek to reduce emissions while also recognizing the critical importance of affordable and reliable energy to improved living standards worldwide. To support both economic and climate progress, well-designed and transparent policies that carefully weigh costs and benefits are needed. Such policies are likely to help manage the risks of climate change while also enabling societies to pursue other high-priority goals – including clean air, water, access to reliable, affordable energy and economic opportunity for all people. 

Energy is a global business and natural gas is a versatile and abundant resource that is helping to drive a manufacturing renaissance and lower emissions. We are witnessing an increasing number of suppliers and buyers in the global natural gas market beyond traditional participants, including more diversity of experience, culture and business. 

Research and technology will be vital to improving living standards while addressing climate risks. Advances in technology will continue to reshape the energy playing field. Inclusion and diversity is a key competitive advantage that can help increase creativity and innovation.

Technology development will achieve superior results by realizing the full potential of a talented and diverse workforce through an inclusive environment that maximizes the value of everyone’s thoughts, skills, experiences, and culture. Many technologies not prevalent five to 10 years ago have a more significant role today, and their impacts will continue to expand. 

At ExxonMobil, our efforts in pursuing technologies to enhance existing operations and develop alternative energies with a lower carbon intensity are made possible by embracing inclusion and diversity. The collaboration with our partner FuelCell Energy, Inc. in pursuing novel technology in natural gas power plant carbon capture is an excellent example of innovation and diversity at work.

This potential breakthrough, using fuel cells to capture carbon and create electricity at the same time, could substantially reduce costs and lead to a more economical pathway toward large-scale application globally.

Inclusive and collaborative efforts can also go beyond industry, by sponsoring research at academic and nongovernmental institutions across the globe, in areas of energy efficiency, cogeneration, flare reduction, carbon capture and sequestration, and research on lower-emission energy solutions.
