Rope access experts can often replace scaffolding, lifts and cranes when oil and gas installations and offshore wind turbines are serviced and maintained. With the acquisition of Danish Rope Access ApS, a leading company within its field, Semco Maritime A/S is getting professional rope access staff that can carry out assignments in an efficient and cost-saving way for clients within the energy sector.
Verner Andersen, Vice President for the Semco Maritime division Operation Support, expects the new subdivision, Semco Rope Access, to grow from a few employees to about 50 rope access experts within the next two or three years. In the first phase the growth will mainly take place within the oil and gas sector, but he expects the offshore wind industry to take over as the fastest growing client base.
- We see great opportunities within surface treatment and guaranteed inspections of the increasing number of offshore wind turbines in the North Sea area. The acquisition of Danish Rope Access means increased competitiveness within a number of assignments where it is not cost-effective to spend several days with scaffolding. At the same time we meet the strict regulations of IRATA, which guarantees that work is carried out safely, says Verner Andersen.
So far Semco Maritime has contracted this work to foreign business partners within rope access. However, the Norwegian oil and gas industry demands rope access staff trained according to Scandinavian regulations.
The former owner of Danish Rope Access, Frank Vilstrup, will be the Operation Manager at Semco Rope Access, and he brings with him a number of his trusted employees.
- As Semco Maritime contacted me, it was essential for me to understand the culture of the company. It is very important for me that it is great to go to work and I also meet with my colleagues during my free time. It has made a great impression on me that Semco Maritime has their own social worker and that they give high priority to the welfare of their employees, says Frank Vilstrup.
After a career as Sergeant Major in the Danish Defence. Frank Vilstrup has been self-employeed since 1998, at first within outdoor activities, teambuilding and management development and from 2006 with rope access as his area of speciality. Since 2003 he has climbed 5000-6000 hours and he thus fully meets the IRATA’s level 3 requirements for 2000 hours and at least two years experience. As the only person in Denmark he has an IRATA approvement both within the operational and the educational area. Furthermore, Frank Vilstrup holds the American SPRAT-certification, which is particularly used within the growing wind turbine industry.
